What are electrolytes?
Electrolytes are found in bodily fluids (blood, sweat and urine). Electrolytes are given their name because they literally have an “electric charge.” They separate into positively and negatively charged ions when they’re dissolved in water. The reason this is important is because of how nerve reactions take place. Your nerves signal to one another by a process of chemical exchanges dependent on oppositely charged ions, both outside and inside of your cells.
Electrolytes are substances that turn into ions when in specific solutions and acquire the ability to conduct electricity. They regulate nerve and muscle function, hydrate the body, balance blood acidity and pressure, and help rebuild damaged tissue. They are present in the human body and are essential for the function of our cells and organs.
Awake or asleep, our bodies use electrolytes. When exercising or in the heat, we use more electrolytes. Flying, hiking, and mental activity, such as an exam or clinic requires electrolytes. Signs of dehydration include headaches, leg cramps, and sluggishness.
Optimal hydration requires a good balance of the macro and micro-essential electrolytes in the human body. Ultima provides these essential electrolytes roughly in proportion to what is lost in human perspiration.
How do electrolytes work?
The wall of your small intestine has transporter proteins in it. When they encounter a ratio of 2 sodium : 1 glucose molecules, the transporter is activated, and all 3 molecules are pumped into the bloodstream. This creates what is called osmotic pressure. Water in your body always wants to be “balanced”, so it moves to areas where there are more particles. By moving more sodium and glucose molecules into the bloodstream, the water (which doesn’t need a transporter protein), moves into the bloodstream through osmosis. So rather than waiting for natural absorption of the nutrients and water, your body can accelerate it. We created Rehydrate+Collagen to replicate the mineral component in blood.
How do I tell if I am dehydrated and need electrolytes?
Some of the symptoms of dehydration are headaches, fatigue, leg cramps, sluggishness, even hunger (what often appears as hunger is the body signalling for hydration). Jet lag is a symptom of dehydration and so is a hangover. Each of these symptoms can be treated by using withinUs Rehydrate + Collagen.
Why do you use cane sugar?
Our ethically sourced, vegan, organic, non GMO project verified cane sugar is used to optimize the absorption of electrolytes and water. Glucose is the most common form of sugar and what is used in the body for energy. Glucose enhances sodium and water transport across the upper intestinal wall and into the bloodstream (a process more commonly known as osmosis). In other words, a solution of water + glucose + salt hydrates better than water alone.
Carbohydrates are necessary for two important body functions - energy and digestion. During intense exercise, carbohydrates can be depleted at a rate of 3-4g per min. If exercise is sustained for 2 hours or more, your bodies stores will be virtually depleted.
Carbohydrates in the form of glucose are essential in an electrolyte drink to maintain energy levels and replenish muscles post exercise.
Why do you use Rebaudiana Leaf?
Extracted from the rebaudiana leaf, a natural sweetening ingredient that we have chosen to use in powder form. It is approximately 40 times sweeter than sugar but contains zero calories. Rebaudiana leaf in Rehydrate + Collagen enables a sweet tasting electrolyte without having to use an excessive amount of sugar.
We sourced a rebaudiana leaf extract that is gently processed with a natural enzyme. The purpose of this natural process is to improve taste and sweetening qualities by eliminating the traditional “licorice” aftertaste and “bitter note” that is common among many other rebaudiana products. Organic and Non-GMO Project approved also free of yeast, dairy, egg, gluten, wheat, soy, salt, as well as artificial colours, flavours or fragrances.
