SPINNING 101 ~ TRUMARINE TEAM & SPIN SOCIETY'S CO-FOUNDER DOMINIK DESBOIS

Ready to release your sweaty, inner rockstar? Indoor cycling “spin” classes are far from the usual routine and boring workout. Hop on a stationary bike, cue the music, dim the lights and find out why so many people are hooked on this increasingly popular form of exercise. It is transforming the way people stay active and fit.

Spin classes are a great way to get cardio exercise, have a good sweat, and get motivated. Have you tried a class?

If you are looking for a sweaty workout in a fun, energetic and positive environment- we suggest you sign up for a class - You won’t regret it.

We recently sat down with Dominik Desbois, Co-Founder of Spin Society - an indoor cycling studio in Vancouver, B.C. Dominik started spinning in 2013 after his wife finally got him to join a class with her in LA. His first spin experience blew him away, and he immediately started dreaming about opening his own studio. He spoke to us about why he loves spinning, the benefits of this cardio exercise and why you might want to give it a try.

The Benefits

Low Impact

“Spinning differs from most other cardio exercises since it is extremely accessible to a wide range of people because cycling is a low impact movement.”

Unlike other forms of cardio exercise, such as running- which puts a great amount of strain on joints, especially your knees and ankles - spinning is a low impact movement and is great for people with lower back and knee problems.

 The Adrenaline Rush

What sets spinning apart from other forms of exercise is the adrenaline rush.

“The energy in a spin studio is contagious and leaves you with a feeling of complete satisfaction. Riders feed off each other’s positive energy and encourage each other to keep going and get stronger with each class. For some reason, after a class you are totally spent, but want to hop back on that bike as soon as possible. Some would even says the feeling becomes a healthy addiction… ”

 The Instructors

The instructors at Spin Society LOVE what they do, and are constantly striving for perfection. It is not uncommon to see instructors in the studio during their off-times, working on their playlists and refining their routines. They want to make each class the absolute best ride experience for every individual.

Don’t Be Intimidated

We know that there are many people who are intimidated to try new forms of exercise, especially spin. You do not have to be an expert cyclist - not at ALL. Spin Society’s 50 minute classes can be tailored to fit any fitness level. Indoor cycling is about pushing yourself at your own pace and building endurance. Don’t get discouraged if you can’t keep up your first time, you will have something to work towards. It is not competitive and everyone rides together, but at our own physical level. It will move, inspire and surprise you into owning how strong you truly are.

Since we planned on writing a blog about spin classes, we would naturally have to take a class ourselves. For the first time last week, members of the TruMarine Team attended a class at Spin Society. Yes, we were nervous and slightly intimidated, but the staff at Spin Society made us feel welcome, it was simple and effortless with their help to get us ready for class, and wow, did we had an amazing ride! We are now hooked!

Dominik understands that spinning can be intimidating and offered some great tips to make new riders feel comfortable and prepared for their first ride.

What To Bring

One of the greatest things about spin is you don’t have to bring any special equipment. Hydration is essential! Bring your bottle of water and make sure you hydrate before, during and after the class.

Wear breathable, lightweight, workout gear (nothing too loose) and the Spin Society team will hook you up with complimentary cycling shoes, a gym towel, shower towel and of course, the stationary bike.

Arrive Early

Arriving at the studio early (at least 15 minutes) will ensure you have time to sign in, choose a bike and meet the instructor. This will also give you enough time to ask the wonderful team to help adjust your bike so it fits you perfectly. Spin Society has locker rooms for men and women, showers, vanities and changing areas.

 Remember, YOU Are In Control

As much as spinning is a group exercise, you are in total control of your ride. If ever you need to rest, simply lower the tension on your bike and keep your legs moving. ALWAYS keep your legs moving. Then, when you’re ready to re-join the movements, you can get right back into it. The instructor and the music are there to motivate you, but make sure you listen to your body throughout the class. Take it easy and build up your stamina and you will be amazed with your progress.

For the TruMarine Team, spinning has become one of our new, healthy obsessions. We can’t wait to book our next ride and try out classes with every instructor.
Our instructor last week was Shawn, and he was absolutely incredible! We are still in awe how he rode, instructed, danced (yes, danced!) and motivated the class. Shawn’s playlist was awesome, and his class is guaranteed to get you moving and boost your mood!

It really is our happy hour.

Spinning is just like riding a bike to the rhythm of high energy music, in a beautiful space with inspirational trainers.

So what are you waiting for? Hop on a bike, grab your water bottle, rock your outfit, start pedaling and have a blast!
