'Tis the holiday season.

A time for family gatherings, gift giving, and food galore. If I'm being honest, self care over the holidays is often a struggle and somehow seems to fall onto the back-burner. It’s wonderful to be social, to give gifts and even cook a feast, but overcommitting can (and eventually will) lead to exhaustion.

I'm sure you've heard it all before - get enough sleep, stay hydrated, meditate, indulge but don't over indulge - it can be overwhelming. Here are 5 TIPS from a chronic over-committer that really improve how I feel throughout the holidays.

Easier said than done.

My tip: Enjoy the moment, and get rid of the guilt. Whether it’s treating yourself with a gift, a spa day, or a second helping of holiday goodies, do not feel guilty for indulging. You are allowed to overindulge as long as you don’t make it a habit! Make it a priority to get back on track post holiday season as establishing healthy relationships with food and money are essential components for a solid life foundation.

Throughout the holiday season there will be parties, dinners, or outings that you will feel obligated to attend. Letting go of the mindset that these are things you “should" be doing allows room for you to do things that are important to you.  Take a moment to decide if the outing serves your well-being. It’s 100% okay to say, no.

That you need downtime.

A 'go-go-go' lifestyle will eventually catch up with you. Try your best not to ignore the signs from your body that are asking you to slow down. Acknowledge that your sleep patterns, eating habits, and general pace all have an impact on your health. The simplest acts of self-care go a long way. Unwind before bed with an immune boosting night time tea, sleep in if you need to, and keep up with you vitamins and supplements.

For yourself, and for others.

The holidays can be a tough time for many people. Do your best to keep an open mind. The gift that keeps on giving is happiness - it propels a chain reaction. Offer help, volunteer, or donate to a charity. Simple acts of kindness go a long way.

What the holidays are all about.

At the end of the day, this time is meant for us to reflect on all that we have to be grateful for. Express thankfulness and appreciation for all aspects of your life, regardless of how big or small they are. Feel the way your demeanour changes when you think about how grateful you are for witnessing the sunrise, for the funny moment that happened at work, or the shoes on your feet. As Lewis Howes said - "If you concentrate on what you have, you'll always have more. If you concentrate on what you don't have, you'll never have enough."

Cheers to the holidays, and to a happy, healthy, mindful you.
